What Is a Good TEAS 7 Score? Score Levels Explained

October 18, 2026 · 2 min read · EntranceReady

A “good” TEAS 7 score is the one that gets you into your program. There's no universal pass mark — each school sets its own minimum, and competitive programs often admit students well above it. Here's how to read your score and set a realistic target.

How the TEAS 7 is scored

The TEAS 7 has 170 questions, but only 150 are scored. The other 20 are unscored pretest items mixed in with the rest, so treat every question as if it counts.

You'll receive:

  • A total (composite) score reported as a percentage
  • Section scores for Reading, Math, Science and English & Language Usage
  • Sub-scores for the topics inside each section
  • An academic preparedness level that groups your total score into a band

The academic preparedness levels

ATI groups total scores into five levels. The ranges below are the ones ATI has published; always check the current ranges on your official score report.

Level Approximate total score
Developmental 0% – 40.7%
Basic 41.3% – 58.0%
Proficient 58.7% – 77.3%
Advanced 78.0% – 90.0%
Exemplary 90.7% – 100%

Many programs ask for Proficient or higher. Competitive programs frequently look for Advanced.

How to find the score you need

  1. Check each program's admissions page for its minimum TEAS score — some also set minimums for individual sections, often Reading or Science.
  2. Ask how applicants are ranked. If programs rank by TEAS score, the minimum is not the target — the score of last year's admitted students is.
  3. Add a buffer. Aim 5–10 points above the minimum you found, because test-day nerves usually cost a few points.

How to raise your score

  • Find your weakest section first. A short diagnostic tells you where points are easiest to gain.
  • Prioritize Science. It has the most questions (50), and anatomy & physiology is its largest part.
  • Practice under real timing. English gives you about 60 seconds per question — speed matters.
  • Review every mistake. Most score gains come from understanding why an answer is wrong, not from doing more questions.
